Course Prescription

Takes a broad look across essential topics in clinical education of relevance to all clinical teachers involved in teaching with patients, assessing students and planning lessons. Application to practice and peer observation are key components of this course.

Course Overview

The course is an online postgraduate course aimed at engaging everyday clinical teachers from a variety of healthcare professions. There is a strong clear focus on comprehensively covering key topics in clinical teaching and learning, hands-on application of theory to practice, peer review, and developing self-sustaining clinical educators.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Draw upon a functional understanding of the theories and principles underlying everyday clinical education activities in teaching, learning, and assessment. (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  2. Design, conduct, and evaluate key clinical education activities in teaching, learning, and assessment based on reflective knowledge, skills, and first-hand experience gained during the course. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8)
  3. Demonstrate competencies in self-reflection, peer review, and the critical appraisal and application of teaching theories and scholarly literature in medical education. (Capability 3, 4 and 7)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 0 hours of lectures, a 15 hour tutorial/workshop, approximately 70 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 65 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Online

ClinEd719 is offered as an online course with a two-day face-to-face workshop, to be held on 31 July & 1 August 2025. Attendance is expected at the workshop and online activities including going through course material and participating in discussion activities of the course.

The course will include live online events to discuss course content and assignments and these may be recorded.

This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

We have modified the instruction for Assignment 1 to make the assessment criteria more explicit and better described.

Academic Integrity
