EDPROF 707 : Bilingual Education

Education and Social Work

Course Prescription

Examines theories, models, and principles for bilingualism and Bilingual Education, as well as multilingual approaches in English-medium contexts. Investigates and critiques programmes, pedagogical approaches, resources, and strategies for bilingual learners in English-medium, Māori-medium, Pacific bilingual/immersion, early childhood, primary or secondary educational contexts. Students develop policy, curriculum and assessment materials suitable for bilingual learners in a particular educational context.

Course Overview

Research has consistently shown the importance of building on students’ funds of knowledge and home language practices as they develop ways of using the dominant societal language. In this course, we will explore how policy and practice in educating plurilingual learners of English in NZ and beyond align with this research finding, while emphasising the important role of educators as advocates for social and linguistic justice. Perspectives from Māori, Pasifika, and other ethnolinguistic learners in NZ will be investigated.

  1. Critically examine and assess curriculum and pedagogical provisions for bi/multilingual learners in New Zealand and global contexts (Capability 1, 5 and 8)
  2. Critically evaluate theories, principles, and models of educating bi/multilingual learners (Capability 3 and 4)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of asset-based pedagogical approaches for supporting bi/multilingual learners (Capability 5, 6 and 7)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 30 point course that they are enrolled in.

A typical semester including the study/exam period totals approximately 15 weeks. You should expect to commit 20 hours in each week to course activities which would include engaging with the course materials on Canvas, attending classes, communicating with lecturers and colleagues via discussions and independent study. As the course is offered as a block course, you will not be attending classes every week.

You can reasonably expect to commit approximately 300 hours to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment, test and exam preparation and completion.

Campus Experience

The course will be taught through in-person seminars with some online support, as a block course. Attendance is required at scheduled activities to receive credit for components of the course. Seminars will not be available as recordings. 

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.
