Course Prescription

Advanced theory of modern control systems with emphasis on optimisation techniques for both deterministic and stochastic processes. State-space modelling of dynamic systems and choice of suitable performance criteria. Adaptive, nonlinear and sliding mode control systems. Core concepts are extended by an individual research project in which a challenging control problem is analysed and solved.

Course Overview

The course provides  an introduction to the some of the advanced aspects of control systems engineering  including  stability analysis of nonlinear systems using Lyapunov Criteria, Lyapunov Based Controller Design for nonlinear systems, Concept of control Lyapunov function,  Design of feedback linearizing controller for nonlinear systems, Design of Minimum Variance and Self-tuning Adaptive controller, Design of Robust Controller,  Design of sliding mode controller, Modelling and Identification of linear systems by least squares based system identification techniques etc.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop controller design methods for nonlinear systems and investigate the stability of nonlinear systems. (Capability 3.1, 3.2, 4.1 and 4.2)
  2. Learn how to model/identify a linear system from input-output data using system identification methods. (Capability 3.1 and 4.1)
  3. Learn about the design of state feedback controllers and observers for MIMO systems (Capability 4.1 and 5.1)
  4. Learn about the design of both optimal and robust controllers for linear systems. (Capability 3.1, 4.1 and 4.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, each week you can expect 2 hours of lectures, 1 hours of tutorials, 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including labs/tutorials/studios/clinics to receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars/tutorials/labs/studios will be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.
Attendance on campus is required for the test/exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
