Course Overview

ENVSCI 706 : Ecosystem Dynamics
Ecosystems play a pivotal role in modulating the fluxes of energy and matter at the Earth’s surface, including the cycling of carbon, nutrients, and greenhouse gases. Understanding the structure and function of ecosystems is critical for understanding environmental challenges such as global warming, biodiversity loss, and pollution. This course will provide students with an introduction to the principles of ecosystem ecology and associated applications to environmental change. Broad course themes include: carbon and nutrient cycling, biodiversity and ecosystem functions, land-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases, modern approaches to measure ecosystem functions, effects of environmental change on the functioning of ecosystems. The course has a practical focus and involves fieldwork and analysis of data. Students will conduct a small research project applying commonly used techniques in ecosystem ecology.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of the principles of ecosystem ecology (Capability 1, 3 and 5)
  2. Identify and describe how ecosystem processes are influences by abiotic and biotic factors (Capability 1 and 2)
  3. Utilise quantitate methods to assess ecosystem dynamics (Capability 1, 3 and 5)
  4. Work collaboratively to formulated research questions and hypothesis
  5. Develop and demonstrate written and oral communications skills for different audiences (Capability 4, 5 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 7 hours of lectures, 30 hours of field/lab, a 3 hour tutorial,  30 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 80 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including  field and lab classes to complete components of the course.
On-campus lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events. The activities for the course are scheduled as a 6 week module

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Learning resources will be made available through Canvas and Talis.
