- Set Theory and Proofs (2 weeks): Set Theory Basics, Logic, Proof Techniques
- Functions (2 weeks): Function Concepts (domain, range, injective, surjective, bijective functions), Operations (composition, inverse), Special Functions (polynomials, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions)
- Limits (2 weeks): Introduction to Limits (intuitive and formal approaches, limit laws), Epsilon-Delta (formal definition and basic proofs), Continuity (definition, types of discontinuities),
- Sequences (1 week): Convergence and Divergence (limits of sequences, monotonic and bounded sequences), Key Sequences (arithmetic, geometric, harmonic sequences, etc)
- Differentiation (3 weeks): Formal Definition, Derivative Basics (rate of change, rules of differentiation), Techniques (product, quotient, chain rule, implicit differentiation), Applications (optimisation, curve sketching, related rates, Mean Value Theorem)

Tuākana
Whanaungatanga and manaakitanga are fundamental principles of our Tuākana Mathematics programme which provides support for Māori and Pasifika students who are taking mathematics courses. The Tuākana Maths programme consists of workshops and drop-in times, and provides a space where Māori and Pasifika students are able to work alongside our Tuākana tutors and other Māori and Pasifika students who are studying mathematics.
Workload Expectations
This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in. For each week of this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, a 1-hour tutorial, 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.
Delivery Mode
Campus Experience
- Attendance is expected at scheduled activities for all components of the course.
- Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities, including tutorials, will not be available as recordings.
- The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
Learning Resources
Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.
- There will be a course book for MATHS 130, which can be downloaded on Canvas or purchased from the Student Resource Centre.
- There will also be Canvas links to Khan academy tutorial videos relevant to the course content (and some prerequisites).
Student Feedback
During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.
At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.
