MEDIMAGE 716 : Fundamentals of Clinical Ultrasound

Course Prescription

Provides students with knowledge of the fundamental scientific principles of ultrasound. Students will develop the ability to apply this knowledge to different patient populations. In addition, students will investigate standard sonography imaging techniques and analyse sonographic imaging appearances.

Course Overview

This course aims to provide students with a fundamental specialised theoretical understanding of ultrasound technology and applications. The student will develop the ability to apply this knowledge in the safe use of ultrasound equipment for clinical and/or research purposes. In particular, students will investigate standard ultrasound imaging techniques and sonographic appearances in relation to imaging of the female pelvis and first trimester pregnancy. Learning activities and assessments are designed to support the development of not only clinical competency, but also growth holistically as a reflective practitioner.

The course is delivered fully online by distance via the University of Auckland’s learning management system ‘Canvas’. It incorporates a range of learning approaches including videos, webpages, links to the library databases and resources, and utilising online technologies to promote shared learning opportunities. Academic learning is expected to inform clinical practice and enhance levels of clinical competency.

While this course has no pre-requisites or restricted course requirements, non-Medical Imaging Technologists (MITs) will be required to submit an enrolment concession request to have their eligibility for enrolment assessed. It will be expected that students have completed courses in anatomy, physiology and pathology to be eligible. This course is currently compulsory for the PGDipHSc(Ultrasound) programme and is a pre-requisite for most of the other ultrasound-specific postgraduate courses. In 2026, this course may be removed from the PGDipHSc(Ultrasound) programme so please contact the Postgraduate Academic Coordinator, Adrienne Young, to confirm your study pathway before enrolling. The course is suitable to be undertaken as a one-off course (Certificate of Proficiency) for registered MIT's for their Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Access to a clinical ultrasound department is highly recommended.

This course is 100% internally assessed. An aggregated mark of 50% or more is required to successfully pass this course. Resubmission of failed assessments is not permitted.

Penalties for excessive word count and/or late submission (without prior written approval for an extension) will be applied in accordance with the 'Medical Imaging Assessment Requirements and Presentation Criteria' document.

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines, a standard 15-point course represents approximately 150 hours of study. This equates to approximately 12 hours per week and may be broken down as follows:

  • Set readings relevant to ultrasound theory (40 hours)
  • Other resources provided on Canvas e.g. videos, websites (10 hours)
  • Assignments and self-directed learning (100 hours)

Online

The course will include live online events including group discussions and tutorials and these will be recorded.
Attendance on campus is not required for the tests.
Where possible, study material will be available at course commencement.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

  • Miele, F. R. (2021). Ultrasound physics and instrumentation. (6th ed.). Miele Enterprises.
Students will be required to purchase a copy of the textbook by Miele. Instructions on how to buy this will be provided on the course on Canvas.  Students may purchase the other textbooks although online copies are available via the Philson Library catalogue. Note, these may be the older editions.  

Other course materials are made available in the course website located in the University’s learning platform Canvas, which also includes reading lists (where available). A large selection of other resources will be able to be accessed online via  the Philson Library databases.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Postgraduate courses do not have a Class Representative; instead, they have programme/ specialisation representatives who can take feedback to the Medical Imaging Board of studies.

Students who responded to the course SET evaluations in 2024 agreed that they were clearly informed how their learning would be assessed, and the assessments supported the aims of this course. They valued the way that the course was structured with good alignment between course content and assessments. Some content changes were implemented in this course in 2024 with physics topics being transferred to MEDIMAGE717 

Other Information

Communication
All official communication to a student will be sent to the student’s current University email address (username@aucklanduni.ac.nz) and the student is responsible for ensuring that any desired forwarding to other addresses is in place and operating correctly. Staff will not be responsible for any consequences if students fail to read and respond to University correspondence in a timely manner.

Students are encouraged to use the course ‘Discussion’ forum on Canvas as much as possible for communication with staff and other students. Email may be used for more private matters. Email communication to University staff and supervisors must be sent from the student’s University email address.

As a general rule, students are advised to log-on at least twice a week. Logging on regularly allows regular checking of 'Announcements' as well as reading and responding to messages from peers on 'Discussions'.

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework, tests and examinations as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
