Course Prescription

Covers the current understanding of mechanisms implicated in toxicity of drugs and environmental chemicals plus the basis of inter-individual susceptibility. The course identifies strategies used to predict and prevent adverse reactions during drug development.

Course Overview

This course involves advanced study into the role of metabolism (including induction/inhibition and genetic polymorphisms) in the toxicity of xenobiotics and molecular events following exposure to toxic xenobiotics, such as mutagenesis, teratogenesis and apoptosis. The toxicity of several classes of drugs, including anticancer, antibacterial and antimalarial drugs is also studied in detail

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles important to predicting adverse reactions to compounds, whether they be under development as a drug or through environmental exposure (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of biological targets and the damage caused to such targets plus some of the ensuing changes at the level of organelle, cell, organ and organism (Capability 1, 2 and 4)
  3. Evaluate the relevance of non-clinical species to the prediction of human drug safety (Capability 1, 4 and 6)
  4. Apply scientific reasoning and methods to experimental design for assessment of chemical toxicity (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  5. Apply critical evaluation to identify the essentials of scientific information in written reports and oral presentation (Capability 1, 2, 4 and 5)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures and  2 hours of reading and thinking about the content per week and 102 hours of work on assignments and exam preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will not be available as recordings.
The course will include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.
Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
