Course Prescription

Specific and selected aspects of chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology are explored in the context of beginning clinical pharmacy practice.

Course Overview

The course is divided into three integrated modules focussed on chemistry,  pathophysiology  and pharmacology explaining their relevance to Pharmacists and Pharmacy practice. Where possible, examples directly relevant to Pharmacists will be used as frameworks for learning in the disciplines covered in the modules.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply principles and concepts of physical and organic chemistry to an understanding of drugs as chemical substances (Capability 3.1, 4.1, 5.1 and 7)
  2. Describe and explain the basic mechanisms leading to human disease (Capability 3.1, 4.1 and 7)
  3. Describe pathophysiology in the context of human illness and drug action (Capability 3.1, 4.1 and 7)
  4. Describe and explain the scientific basis of drug action and the principles of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and toxicology (Capability 1.2, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1 and 7)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 300 hours in total during delivery.

For this course, you can expect 66 hours of lectures, 18 hours of practical laboratory classes  (spread across 6 sessions), 8 hours of  workshops (4 sessions), 60 hours of reading and thinking about the content and the remainder on assignments and/or test preparation.


Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs & workshops to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including workshops & labs will not be available as recordings.
Attendance on campus is required for the tests & exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a block delivery.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

No issues were raised during 2024  and no major changes are planned for the next iteration of the course 

Academic Integrity
