Course Prescription

Critical exploration of contemporary theories and practice frameworks for reflective supervision in health, counselling and human services. An examination of strategies for ongoing professional development, including reflective practice, critical reflection, communities of practice, and learning organisations. Different modes of supervision (such as peer supervision and interprofessional supervision) will be examined along with creative action methods of supervision engagement.

Course Overview

This course is delivered on-campus through 2 X 2 day block teaching days and is open to students from a range of professions with previous supervisory experience. 

This course explores aspects of professional development and reflective practice. Topics will be drawn from a range and may include:

• Theories of professional development

• Professional learning strategies /learning organisations

• Reflective practice

• Critical reflection 

• Collaborative observation and feedback

• Modes of supervision in the current context

• Interprofessional work

• Creative  action methods of supervision engagement

Students need to obtain the minimum pass mark of 50%  aggregate total over the two essays and hand in both essays to pass this course.

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines this course is a standard 30 point course and represents approximately 300 hours of study for the semester. For this course, you can expect 24 hours of lectures and class time, which leaves approximately 130 hours for independent study (reading and thinking about the content) and 130 hours for literature research and work on assignments.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.

The course will not include live online events.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a block delivery.

Other Information

You must have completed an undergraduate degree from a recognised university (or similar institution) and be currently employed in health, counselling, social services, legal services, education, human services, or similar professional context.
You will also need at least three years’ experience in health, counselling, social services, legal services, education, human services, or similar professions.
This course is suitable for students with previous supervisory experience. It may is suitable for students who have completed the PG Cert in Professional Supervision (or similar).
