Course Prescription

An introduction to Māori analyses of topics that are often discussed and sometimes controversial, and that continue to shape contemporary life in New Zealand. Topics include aspects of world view, philosophy and social organisation; the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Waitangi and European immigration; and contemporary issues including Treaty claims, ownership of the foreshore and seabed and constitutional issues.

Course Overview

Māori 130/130G is an introduction to the Māori world. It is taught in the English language using some Māori language terms that you will learn during the course. It is suitable for students from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, from absolute beginners to those with extensive knowledge.   
  
This course presents a Māori view of how we see the world, offering insights into topics that are often discussed and sometimes controversial, and that continue to shape contemporary life in New Zealand. These include aspects of world view and cosmology, customs and values, mātauranga Māori (Māori epistemology), the Māori language, performing arts, He Whakaputanga 1835 and Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840, colonisation, Māori struggles for justice to the present day, treaty claims settlements, political independence, mau moko (permanent skin adornment), incarceration, health and constitutional transformation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand many key Maori concepts. (Capability 1)
  2. Be familiar with key events in the transformation of Maori life over time. (Capability 1 and 6)
  3. Understand how this knowledge relates to contemporary issues in New Zealand. (Capability 1 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 5 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation per week.

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities to complete the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Tutorials will not be available as recordings.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

There is no course book or required text book for this course: all course readings will be provided on Canvas.

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

The course is constantly adapted to meet students needs each semester.  We will endeavor to make changes and implement feedback from students provided to the class representative, the tutors and the lecturer during the course to ensure student needs are being met. 

Academic Integrity
