ACCTG 102 : Accounting Concepts

Course Prescription

Basic principles and concepts of accounting that underlie the production of information for internal and external reporting. This course provides the technical platform for second year courses in financial and management accounting, finance, and accounting information systems.

Course Overview

This course builds on the introduction to financial accounting begun in ACCTG 101. Whereas ACCTG 101 is designed for and required of all business majors and, as such, offers more of a "user" perspective to the broad areas of financial accounting, management accounting, and finance, ACCTG 102, designed for and required of all Accounting and Finance majors, offers more of the "preparer" perspective required of such majors. ACCTG 102, anchored to the New Zealand Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting and the International Financial Reporting Standards ("IFRS"), seeks to provide students with the ability to analyse 1) which business events should be recorded in the accounting records, 2) how they are recorded, and 3) how those events are summarised in financial statements. ACCTG 102 aims to achieve these goals through active student engagement, primarily by having students engage in weekly problem solving.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe and discuss the New Zealand financial reporting environment populated by "for-profit" companies that must follow IFRS. (Capability 1 and 4.2)
  2. Analyse and apply specialised knowledge of the New Zealand Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting to business and accounting events. (Capability 1, 2 and 4.2)
  3. Understand and apply specialised knowledge of the processes in an accounting period cycle for service and merchandising businesses. (Capability 1 and 4.2)
  4. Develop and demonstrate good problem solving skills. (Capability 2, 3 and 4.2)
  5. Communicate in writing an introductory understanding of a cloud-based software tool. (Capability 4.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 24 hours of lectures, 11 hours of tutorials, 35 hours of reading and thinking about the content, 20 hours of tutorial problem preparation, and 60 hours of work on assignment, test, and final exam preparation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures and tutorials complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Tutorials will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test/exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Canvas may be accessed for announcements, coursework marks, instructional materials, and lecture recordings. Instructional materials include tutorial and assignment problems and their solutions.

Piazza will be activated on Canvas to enable students to learn from each other.

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
