Course Prescription

People who understand the basic principles of finance are likely to get much more mileage out of their money – whether spending, borrowing, saving or investing – than those who do not. Develop an understanding of how to be in control of spending and saving; understand borrowing; make informed investment decisions; know broadly what to insure and what not to; recognise scams and consider whether money is the key to happiness.

Course Overview

Life requires an understanding of how finance and financial arrangements impact on members of a community from savings through to investments decisions. The ability to make financial decisions and manage personal and business finances permeates all aspects of an individual’s life. From value shopping or buying a house to involvement in business organisations, evaluating the impact of financial decisions forms an essential life-time competency for every person in today’s society.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Compare and contrast the concepts of saving and spending and utilise the financial planning process to manage your financial affairs. (Capability 3.1 and 3.2)
  2. Develop budgets and explain the impact they have on commercial and human behaviour. (Capability 3.1 and 5.1)
  3. Understand and describe the decision process in respect to housing purchases in New Zealand (Capability 4.2 and 5.1)
  4. Identify and describe the components and characteristics of consumer loans in New Zealand. (Capability 3.2)
  5. Examine and describe the risks and returns of investment in shares, bonds (debentures) and managed funds. (Capability 3.1, 3.2, 4.1 and 4.2)
  6. Analyse and interpret financial statements and explain the need for professional and ethical standards. (Capability 3.2 and 4.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 4 hours of reading and thinking about the content and  3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will not be available as recordings.

Exam timetables are normally published online during the mid-semester break of the relevant semester. At that point, you will also learn the mode for each of your exams, e.g., if it will be a remote/online exam, or an on-campus exam.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Student feedback about new content will be considered for incorporation into future offerings of the course.
