ACCTG 211 : Financial Accounting

Business and Economics

2024 Semester Two (1245) (15 POINTS)

Course Prescription

The study of financial accounting principles within New Zealand, to enable students to: (i) understand how they are developed and influenced; (ii) understand and apply New Zealand Financial Reporting Standards; (iii) report the results of complex business structures involving multiple entities and segments. Completing students will understand the role financial statements play in investment, analysis and contracting decisions, providing a base for advanced study and supporting other areas, particularly finance.

Course Overview

The broad purpose of this course is for students to demonstrate a specialised understanding of selected international accounting standards. This course requires students to take responsibility for their own learning; this includes completing their self-study hours and actively seeking help from academic staff. Students are expected to attend all classes (three to four hours per week) and complete all  assessments by themselves to nurture successful learning.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Express evidence-based conclusions relating to the four major influences on the development and regulation of accounting worldwide. (Capability 3.1 and 4.2)
  2. Demonstrate a specialised understanding of selected international accounting standards being:- NZ IAS 1- NZ IAS 7 - NZ IFRS 16- NZ IAS 16, 36 and 38 - NZ IFRS 3 and 10- NZ IAS 28. Engage constructively with data and use problem-solving strategies to present financial statements that illustrate the effects and requirements of accounting standards. In addition, for NZ IFRS 16, address the business challenges of implementing this standard. (Capability 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2 and 8.2)
  3. Prepare a well-structured written report to illustrate the requirements of NZ IAS 10 clearly. (Capability 3.1, 3.2 and 6.2)
  4. Explain the importance of ethics concerning professional conduct. (Capability 8.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course, i.e., students are expected to spend 150 hours on ACCTG 211 over the semester. Less than one-third of these 150 hours comprise lectures and tutorial attendance; therefore, over 100 hours consist of self-study. 

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at lectures and tutorials to complete components of the course.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test and exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

There is no prescribed text for this course; the lecture materials are, therefore, comprehensive. All course materials will be made available on Canvas/Modules. The accounting standards (IFRS and IAS) covered in this course can be downloaded (for free) from www.xrb.govt.nz.
