ACCTG 222 : Accounting Information Systems

Course Prescription

Encompasses the development and distribution of economic information about organisations for internal and external decision-making. Major themes include: objectives and procedures of internal control, the database approach to data management, data modelling, typical business documents and reports and proper system documentation through data flow diagrams and flowcharts.

Course Overview

The course aims to provide a critical understanding of Accounting Information Systems (AIS) that will enable graduates to practice the subject in an effective manner. A study of organisations, their activities and processes, and the information needs of organisational stakeholders. The course emphasises accounting data flows, the tools for designing accounting information systems, and knowledge of internal control structures in effective accounting information systems that can serve as a foundation for accounting analytics.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and describe information systems, especially accounting information systems and their role in the organization's attainment of its objectives. (Capability 3.2)
  2. Use and interpret system flowcharts and dataflow diagrams to design business processes and accounting cycles taking into consideration multiple perspectives. (Capability 3.2 and 5.1)
  3. Apply accounting principles and theoretical skills to critically evaluate case-based scenarios and communicate individually in written and oral format. (Capability 4.1, 4.2 and 6.1)
  4. Contribute both as an individual and a group member to the use of cloud-based accounting software and other data tools to address business challenges. (Capability 3.2, 5.2 and 7.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course.  A 15-point course represents approximately 150 hours of study. 

For this course, you can expect 24 hours of lectures, 12 hours of workshops, 64 hours of reading and practising and 50 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.
Where restrictions permit, lectures and workshops will be held on campus. Recordings for these will be made available for students where possible via canvas. 
The activities for the course are scheduled as per the standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
