Course Prescription

The study of issues in evaluating accounting information and the use of accounting information by investors and analysts. This includes the examination of the empirical relationship between accounting earnings and share prices and the relationship between financial statement analysis and market efficiency. Perceived market failures will be analysed.

Course Overview

This paper examines the relation between financial accounting information and capital markets. It considers how accounting information is packaged and communicated to investors and examines the relation between accounting information and capital market participants. The course will focus on recent research studies that have been published in top accounting journals. The objective of this course is to give students an awareness of the research examining accounting information and capital markets. During the course, students should learn how to read and evaluate academic accounting studies and should develop a better understanding of the research process.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe different types of research about accounting information and capital markets (Capability 1, 2 and 4.1)
  2. Evaluate aspects of an accounting research article including its theory, research design and results (Capability 2, 3 and 5.1)
  3. Understand and analyse how a financial accounting research article contributes to a body of literature (Capability 1, 2 and 4.1)
  4. Develop a research project in the area of accounting information and capital markets (Capability 1, 3, 4.2 and 4.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

Attendance is required for on-campus students at scheduled seminar time to complete the presentation and participation components of the course.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

A list of readings selected from top accounting journals will be provided. Readings will be made available before class, and must be read in advance to allow you to take part in discussions.
