Course Prescription

Covers the earliest periods of Egypt's development from the prehistoric period to the end of the Old Kingdom. This course focuses on the lead-up to state formation and the great Pyramid Age that followed.

Course Overview

The study of early Egypt is the study of the formation of the state of Egypt and its growth into the familiar ancient superpower. It is a fascinating period, about which more is being discovered with each new excavation. Some of the excavation results have changed the ways in which we understand ancient Egypt, making the study of early Egypt dynamic and exciting. It is a period of earliests and firsts, all of which contribute to our understanding of how Egyptian civilisation both became as powerful as it was and lasted as long as it did. It is also a period of astonishing craftsmanship and artistry. In this class, we will be examining Egypt from ca. 4000 BC to the end of the Old Kingdom, ca. 2181 BC. It is hoped you will come away with an admiration and appreciation for these earliest Egyptians. It is intended you will come away with the ability to discuss the foundations of state, the growth of Egypt into a civilisation, and the decline into the First Intermediate Period.

Prerequisite: 15 points at Stage II in Ancient History, Classical Studies, or Classical Studies and Ancient History Restriction: ANCHIST 253, 353, ANCIENT 253

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 4 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will be available as recordings.
The course will include live online events including group discussions.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

Attendance is expected at scheduled online activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.
The course will include live online events including group discussions and these will be recorded.
Attendance on campus is not required for the quizzes or the exam.
Where possible, study material will be available at course commencement throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

This course is available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2023.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

I have taken into account feedback from students for each iteration of this course, and have applied the most relevant. For this course, I have changed the weekly tutorial content to include a variety of activities, including discussion and interactive learning. These are intended to engage your learning.
