ANCIENT 356 : The Ancient World at War

Course Prescription

Provides an in-depth analysis of the role of the military in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The physical evidence of warfare as well as chronological development of warfare within each society will be discussed. An additional theme will be the interweaving of the social and cultural impact of warfare and the army upon these civilisations.

Course Overview

This course will explore the role and importance of warfare and the military in the ancient Mediterranean world. While touching on some of the more traditional aspects of military history (incl. famous battles, strategy, tactics, equipment, and logistics) it will also analyse the wider social, economic, and cultural contexts that ancient warfare operated within. Focusing on Classical and Hellenistic Greece, as well as Republican and Imperial Rome, it will deploy a combination of ancient literary sources, modern scholarship, archaeological evidence, and ancient iconography to help explain the centrality and enduring importance of warfare to our understanding of the ancient world.

Prerequisite: 15 points at Stage II in Ancient History, Classical Studies, or Classical Studies and Ancient History Restriction: ANCHIST 256, 356, ANCIENT 256

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Able to study the nature of ancient warfare in its social and cultural context from Archaic Greece down through Imperial Rome (Capability 1.3, 2.3, 3.1 and 5.2)
  2. Able to learn how to analyze ancient sources - both literary and archaeological - and how to use these sources to argue historical points, in the process developing transferable skills in the fields of source criticism, argumentation, and communication (Capability 1.3, 2.1, 3.2 and 5.2)
  3. Able to learn how to analyze and use modern sources from different contexts, as well as how to deploy various historiographical methodologies (Capability 1.3, 2.2, 4.2 and 5.2)
  4. Able to consider whether and how it may be possible to reach value judgements about various issues in past societies, and will be able to view modern and contemporary issues in a comparative context. (Capability 1.3, 2.3, 3.2 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, 4 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars will not be available as recordings.

Where possible, study material will be released progressively throughout the course.
