ANTHRO 727A/B : Ethnographies of Music-making

Course Prescription

Advanced theories and methodologies for the ethnomusicological analysis of live musical performances and other behaviours across all genres and cultures. Primary attention is given to ethnography and participant-observation supported by analysis of industrial, cultural, musical, and mediated phenomena.

Course Overview

Students will be introduced to and familiarized with major literature on ethnographic research methods in ethnomusicology and anthropology. Regular attendance to weekly Post-Graduate Seminar class and meeting with an appointed supervisor is mandatory. It is students’ responsibility to set up a weekly meeting with the supervisor and discuss course reading, assignments, and comprehension.

Prerequisite: 30 points from ANTHRO 323, 333, 357 To complete this course students must enrol in ANTHRO 727 A and B, or ANTHRO 727

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop Critical thinking, reading and writing (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and 2.2)
  2. Develop and demonstrate a good understanding of disciplinary history and research methodology (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.3 and 6.2)
  3. Develop communication skills (Capability 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3)

Presentation and Participation (20%): Presentation and participation in the Ethno PG Seminar
Essay (50%): Five (5) short book reviews on Ethnomusicology and Ethnography Methods ; 
5-600 word summary + presentation to Ethno PG Seminar (15 minutes presenation + 5-minute questions)
Report (30%): One (1) annotated bibliography surveying the field of study that each student is keen to focus with or incorporate into their PG research (e.g., emotion, migration and diaspora, commerce, violence, gender and sexuality, identity, etc). The size of this project is not specified (appx. 2500 words), but should be appropriate to the field both in breath and depth.

Workload Expectations

This course is a postgraduate-level 15 point course and students are expected to spend minimum 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures/seminar participation, 1 hour of meeting with the supervisor, 4 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments.
