Course Prescription

The Constructed: An introduction to architectural practice as a complex and collaborative enterprise. Offers the opportunity to explore materials, construction, fabrication processes, and detailing, through making. Requires students to understand the full range of drawings required to move from design concept to actual construction.

Course Overview

The course addresses architecture and its realisation and introduces the idea that architecture contributes to material and culture knowledge. Tectonic and detail strategies will be emphasised as design generators balancing strategies drawn from brief, site and landscape. The course presents labour, craft, technique, design production, material selection, and the economies within which these are maintained.

Further, the paper requires students to engage in collaborative modes of production. As such the course acknowledges that architecture is always a collaborative endeavour, be that between architect and client/users, consultants, fabricators, other designers and various public bodies and diverse audiences. This course focuses on the development of group skills, peer-to-peer learning and collaborative design strategies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. THEORY: Explore knowledge associated with systems of fabrication, assemblage and collaborative making. (Capability 2.1 and 3.3)
  2. ARCHITECTONICS: Be able to expressively utilise tectonic characteristics to support project ends and aspirations. (Capability 3.1, 3.3 and 5.2)
  3. PROGRAMME and PERFORMANCE: Explore how the collaborative aspects of architecture can build sustaining relationships with sites and communities. (Capability 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 3.2)
  4. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT: Apply conceptual and developed design skills in the formation of formal/spatial compositions and solutions. (Capability 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3)
  5. MEDIA: Be able to develop both explorative media and ‘working drawings’ as means of testing and resolving project fabrication and assembly. (Capability 4.2, 6.1 and 6.2)

ARCHDES 201 / Design 4 - Topics will address these general learning outcomes in dierent ways. Information on this is given in the Topic Outline.

All student work is initially assessed by the named tutors oering the course brief. Provisional grades are conrmed at the Design Grading Moderation Review (DGMR) in order to ensure parity of grading standards across course briefs. All marks are indicative until conrmed in the Examiner’s Meeting. The DGMR process is rigorous and the Architecture Programme stands by it. The Programme will not regrade work. The only exception to this is in the very rare situation where new information regarding factor(s) that may have afected the student's capacities in the time leading up to examination. A student can however request a discussion of their own work and performance and an explanation of how the grade was awarded. As a rst step, the student should make an appointment to discuss their work with their tutor. If, after meeting with the tutor, a student wishes to pursue this discussion further, they can then make a meeting with the Associate Director Design, and if necessary following this, with the Head of School.

Location plans for Final Reviews and DGMR are displayed in studio spaces and on Canvas prior to week 11. It is important to have your work pinned up in the correct location by the time indicated by your studio tutor. Your tutor will check the material that you have handed in. Unless there is a genuine emergency you must submit your work at this time. Delays in printing are not an acceptable excuse. If you have printing issues, pin up tiled A3 prints and replace these with banner prints for the crit, but the content must be identical and this step should be discussed with your tutor rst. Pinning up your work is equivalent to the rst step in a formal examination – not submitting work on time amounts to not attending the exam. Coursework not received by the due date, and for which no extension of time has been approved (see below), will receive the grade ‘DNC’ (Did Not Complete). Where a student has been unable to attend to their studies for a period of time during the semester due to medical or other exceptional circumstances beyond their control, they may apply for an Extension of Time.

Extensions of time: Requests for extensions of time must be submitted and approved using the ‘EXTENSION OF TIME APPLICATION FORM for coursework submission’ available on Canvas. Students should notify the Course Director/Course Coordinator of their situation as soon as practicable (preferably before any due date), follow the process described on the form, and should provide information in support of the application (such as a medical certificate) where this is available. Notifications received after an assessment due date will be accepted, where this is reasonable, within the context of the course. If possible, students are encouraged to seek medical, counselling or other support from the most appropriate sources.

Teaching & Learning Methods

This is a core design paper. Teaching takes place in a studio setting, kanohi ki te kanohi (face-to-face) with students typically working in groups of approximately 18 students per tutor and brief. Teaching takes place in 1:1 and small group tutorial settings, through assigned tasks (undertaken individually or as part of a group), through presentations, site visits, readings, film or video-viewings, and other participatory means. Students are expected to present work-in-progress to their peers, teachers and invited guests progressively throughout the semester and to engage in discussion of their own work and that of their peers.

Workload Expectations

This paper is designed as a 30-point course, and as such, students are expected to invest 300 hours total across the semester into their Design Course. Over 12 weeks this amounts to approximately 25 hours per week. Of these 25 hours, 8 are undertaken in studio learning settings (2 x 4hr sessions) with the tutor present and students are expected to attend each of these sessions for the full duration. The remaining 17 hours weekly are required for self-directed and informal group study in support of the studio sessions and presentation events.

Campus Experience

Active participation is expected at scheduled activities including all timetabled studio sessions, workshops, and site visits. This attendance is mandatory for completing components of the course. Some presentations will be available as recordings. Other learning activities in studios will typically not be available as recordings. Attendance on campus is expected for the final presentation and for other scheduled presentations events. The activities for the course are scheduled and described in the delivery timetable of the Topic Outline.

Students enrolled in this course have access to the Faculty workshops. Workshop inductions are carried out with first year BAS students in semester 1. Please contact Scott Facer (s.facer@auckland.ac.nz) to book a workshop induction if you have not already undertaken one. Students are required to comply with Health & Safety rules for workshop facilities.

Health & Safety

Falling from even low heights can cause serious injury. Climbing on chairs or tables in studios or in the Exhibition Studio is prohibited. If you require reaching something at height, please liaise with your tutor. They will instruct you on how to achieve this safely. 

All site visits undertaken in design papers are subject to rigorously scrutinised and approved health and safety plans. Tutors will familiarise you with the requirements of these plans before o-campus trips are undertaken. Attendance on these trips is conditional on compliance with these plans.

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Towards the end of each semester students are invited to give feedback on the paper and its teaching through a survey tool called SET Evaluations. Email invitations are issued to all students when the surveys are opened for response. The tutors and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions. Your feedback helps teachers to improve the paper and its delivery for future students. 

Class Representatives in each paper also represent student concerns and oer feedback to the department and Faculty via the Sta-Student Consultative Committee. Students have the opportunity of voting for class representatives at the beginning of the academic year.

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. This requirement also applies to sources on the internet. A student's assessed work may be reviewed for potential plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct, using computerised detection mechanisms.

In design papers, students are expected to utilise design precedents to advance their own designing. However, plagiarism is a serious infringement of academic integrity and this extends to outright copying of previous design work by others or images of their work. If reference is made to, or images utilised of, other design projects, a written citation acknowledging the original creators should be included. You will be instructed in this paper how to use precedents productively and creatively and how to avoid plagiarism in design.
