Course Prescription

The Experimental: Students will be exposed to experimental approaches to architectural design that seek to expand the field of architecture. Highlights the role and agency of media in explorative architectural pursuits.

Course Overview

This is a core course in the BAS. Design 5 presents an introduction to complex architectural thinking. It examines both conceptual and exceptional spaces and develops an understanding of corresponding architectural methodologies and systems. Topics will explore the cutting edge of architecture, with an individual emphasis on the theoretical, contextual, architectonic, communicative, material, spatial, sociological or topographical. It emphasises the importance and power of media experimentation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Show evidence of engagement with selected/prescribed areas of architectural theory and knowledge, and to show evidence of the exploration of the possible influence of this upon the development of architectural propositions. (Capability 1.1, 1.3 and 5.2)
  2. Demonstrate Demonstrate abilities to project, explore and develop the tectonic characteristics of the project through the creative engagement with material, structural or constructional propositions. (Capability 2.2, 2.3 and 3.2)
  3. Show evidence of engagement with identified cultural, social and functional positions as they might inform speculative architectural propositions. (Capability 1.3, 2.2, 2.3 and 6.1)
  4. Show abilities to advance conceptual thinking through engagement with environmental and contextual conditions capable of bearing upon the project, and to examine the way in which the architecture may affect those same conditions in return. (Capability 1.2, 2.2, 3.2 and 6.2)
  5. Demonstrate abilities to develop speculative three dimensional architectural form and space. (Capability 3.1, 3.3 and 5.2)
  6. Display skill in the communication and development of design propositions through the considered and experimental use of architectural media. (Capability 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 5.2)

Specific ARCHDES 300 Design 3 Topics will address these general learning outcomes in different ways. Information on this is given in each Studio Topic Outline.

All student work is initially assessed by the named staff member(s) offering the course topic. Provisional grades are confirmed at the Design Grading Moderation Review (DGMR) in order to ensure parity of grading standards and across course topics. All marks are indicative until confirmed in the Examiner’s Meeting. The Design Grading Moderation Review (DGMR) process is rigorous and the School stands by it. The School will not re-grade work. The only exception to this is the very rare situation where there is new information regarding some factor(s) that was afffecting the student's capacity in the time leading up to examination. A student can however request a discussion of their own work and performance and how the grade was awarded. As a first instance the student should make an appointment to discuss their work with their tutor. If, after meeting with the tutor, a student wishes to pursue this discussion further, they can then make a meeting with the Associate Director Design, and subsequent to this, with the Head of the Architecture Programmes.

Location plans for Final Reviews and Design Grading Moderation Review (DGMR) are displayed in studio spaces and on Canvas prior to week 11. It is important to have your work pinned up in the correct location by the time indicated by your studio teacher. Your teacher will check the material that you have handed in. Unless there is a genuine emergency you must submit your work at this time. Delays in printing are not an acceptable excuse. If you have printing issues, pin up tiled A3 prints and replace these with banner prints for the crit, but the content must be identical. In the eyes of the University this hand in plays the role of the exam – not submitting work by this time constitutes not turning up for the exam.

Where a student has been unable to attend to their studies for a period of time in the semester they may apply for an Extension of Time. Late submissions will be considered on medical and special grounds when supported by a health or other professional, and when the application is made according to the procedure below. Coursework not received by the due date, and for which no extension of time has been approved, will receive the grade ‘DNC’ (Did Not Complete). Requests for extensions of time must be submitted and approved before the due date unless there are exceptional circumstances. Students applying for an extension of time must obtain an Extension of Time Form for Coursework Submission from the School of Architecture and Planning Office (6th Floor of the Architecture Building, Building 421, 26 Symonds Street) and complete the required details. The application form must be signed by your tutor and the Associate Head Design.

Teaching & Learning Methods

This is a core studio course. Teaching takes place in a studio setting, with students typically working in a group of approximately 18 students per teacher. Teaching will take place in 1:1 and small group tutorial settings, through assigned tasks (as an individual or as part of a group), through presentations, site visits, readings, film viewings, etc. Students are expected to present work in progress to their peers, teachers and invited guests throughout the semester and to engage in discussion of their own work and that of their peers.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 30 point course that they are enrolled in. Of this, 8 hours are undertaken in studio learning settings and you are expected to attend each of these. The remainder of the 12 hours per week will comprise self-directed and informal group study in preparation for the studio sessions

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including studios, presentations, workshops and site visits to complete components of the course. Some presentations and sessions will be available as recordings. Other learning activities undertaken in studios may not be available as recordings.The course may include some live online events including group discussions, presentations, etc..
Attendance on campus is required for all scheduled presentations, including the mid-semester and final presentations.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

Online attendance is required at scheduled activities including studios sessions, presentations and workshops to complete components of the course. The course will include live online events including group discussions, presentations and one to one discussions. Some group discussions and presentations may be recorded. Online attendance of scheduled studio sessions is required, as is attendance at all scheduled presentations, including the mid-semester and final presentations. Where possible, study material will be released progressively throughout the course.This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Learning Resources

Studios and Student access to computers and internet: Each studio topic group is allocated a space in the architecture studios and student s are strongly encouraged to work in the studios alongside their peers. Please look for the studio plans pinned up in studio spaces at the start of the semester to locate your group’s space. In the studios all students have access to computers and the internet. Students should note that in submitting their signed studio ballot they are declaring that they have received, read, understood, and agree to abide by all the rules and guidelines noted in the documents “Design Courses and the Use of the Studio Spaces: Guidelines and Requirements” and the “Rules for the Use of the Studios” (both on Canvas).

Students enrolled in this course have access to the faculty workshops. Workshop inductions are carried out with first year BAS students in semester 1. Please contact Scott Facer (s.facer@auckland.ac.nz) to book a workshop induction if you have not already carried this out. All students will comply with operational Health & Safety rules for workshop facilities.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
