ARCHGEN 753 : Diagnosis and Adaptation

Course Prescription

Examines the investigation of existing building fabric, diagnosis of issues impacting upon the state of repair or the level of comfort, and the adaptation of heritage buildings, including strengthening, energy upgrading, reuse and the design of additions and alterations.

Course Overview

The course is designed to contribute to the overall learning of the four masters-level programmes that participate. It seeks to prepare students for careers in the field of heritage preservation and conservation, and/or to contribute to broader understandings of heritage in architectural, urban planning or urban design practice; stimulating critical reflection on the normative conventions of contemporary preservation/conservation practice in New Zealand, and how these may shift or be challenged. The course provides practical engagement with heritage sustainability and how older buildings might be maintained, upgraded and adapted for current purposes and preserved for future generations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand the multi-disciplinary environment connected with the diagnostic procedures for historic buildings and how to consider them within a conservation process (Capability 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3)
  2. Understand different possibilities for the adaptation of historic buildings, preserving the building’s cultural value (Capability 3.1)
  3. Integrate principles and strategies of sustainable development to restoration and adaptation process (Capability 3.2 and 6.1)
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to connect and evaluate multiple disciplinary issues (Capability 2.1, 2.2 and 5.2)
  5. Demonstrate improved research abilities, as well as spoken and written communication skills (Capability 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3)

Pass Requirements

Late submissions will be considered on medical and special grounds when supported by a health or other professional, and when the application is made according to the procedure below. Coursework not received by the due date, and for which no extension of time has been approved, will receive the grade ‘DNC’ (Did Not Complete). Requests for extensions must be submitted and approved before the due date unless there are exceptional circumstances. Students applying for an extension of time must obtain an Extension of Time Application Form for Coursework Submission from the School of Architecture and Planning Office.

Teaching & Learning Methods

The course curriculum is delivered through lectures, seminar/workshop presentations, a site visit and class discussions. Advice on assignment preparation is provided, along with feedback on work submitted.

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines, a standard 15point course represents approximately 150 hours of study.

During a typical teaching week, there will be 2 hours of lectures or seminar presentations. There will also be a 2-hour site visit. For the 12 teaching weeks, this totals to 22 hours (there is no teaching in the 12th week, to allow for the School of Architecture and Planning's Crit/Studio Week). Since the course as a whole represents approximately 150 hours of study, that leaves a total of 128 hours across the entire semester for independent study, e.g. reading, reflection, preparing for assessments/exams, etc.

Health & Safety

Students participating in off-campus site visits/field trips must ensure that they understand and abide by the health and safety requirements provided by the Course Coordinator.  

Other Information

Attendance in class, as well as engagement with course activities and readings, support academic success. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that students make every eort to attend class and complete all the necessary in-class requirements.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
