ASIAN 209 : Transnational Asia: Korea and its Neighbours

Course Prescription

Critically engages the current debates surrounding the concept and movement of “transnational Asia” and the possibility of reconciliation among China, Japan and the two Koreas. Examines the historical, cultural and ideological sources and recent development of this new form of regionalism, in addition to such challenges as Chinese hegemony and competing nationalism in the region.

Course Overview

This course will critically engage with the historical events and interpretations among the countries of East Asia, which requires us to examine the historical, cultural, and ideological sources of conflicts, the recent development of a new form of regionalism, and competing nationalisms in the region.

Prerequisite: ASIAN 100 or KOREAN 120 and 45 points at Stage I in BA Restriction: ASIAN 309, 753

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate good understanding on the shared civilizational foundations in East Asian region, the cooperation and conflicts among China, Japan, and Korea ), and reconciliatory efforts of peoples of the three countries. (Capability 1.1, 2.3, 3.2, 4.2 and 6.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 24 hours of lectures,  11 hour tutorial, 36 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 48 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities such as tutorials will not be available as recordings.

The course will include live online events including tutorials.

Attendance on campus is required for the lectures and tutorials.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

Attendance is required at scheduled online activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.

The course will include live online events including lectures, tutorials, and consultation meetings and these will be recorded.

Attendance on campus is not required for those taking this course offshore.

Where possible, study material will be available at course commencement throughout the course.

This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

This course is available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2022.
