BIOSCI 350 : Protein Structure and Function

Course Prescription

The relationship of molecular structure to protein function will be emphasised. Techniques for the purification, characterisation, production of native and recombinant proteins and three-dimensional structure determination will be combined with a description of protein structure. Specific groups of proteins will be selected to illustrate structure/function relationships and protein evolution.

Course Overview

Studying molecular form, function, and interactions unlocks the secrets of biology. We build on the knowledge gained in BIOSCI 106 and BIOSCI 203, offering a deeper understanding of the molecular foundations of biological systems. We adopt a research-informed approach with lecturers sharing their research expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, biotechnology, and evolution. The integrated laboratory focuses on experimental design, data analysis, and critical thinking, preparing students with the tools necessary to study biological molecules. The classroom and laboratory components integrate theory with real-world biological research and discovery, connecting foundational concepts to practical applications. This course equips students for a range of future opportunities, including postgraduate studies in molecular and cellular biosciences, biomedical sciences, and biotechnology.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Explain and critically evaluate the relationship between molecular structure and function in biological systems. (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  2. Critically evaluate selected fundamental concepts that drive molecular recognition and interactions in biological systems. (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  3. Develop and demonstrate the practical skills associated with molecular biology and protein biochemistry research in a group-based learning environment. (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
  4. Apply practical skills to answer molecular biology questions and communicate the answers in the form of a lab report. (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  5. Demonstrate and apply an ability to work independently, developing a deeper understanding of course content. (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 6)

Students must pass the practical (laboratory) and the theory (quizzes, test and exam) independently to pass the course overall.

Key Topics

Each year a selection of topics will be taught within the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, and biotechnology. The topics will broadly focus on:

  • Molecular structure, function, and dynamics 
  • Molecular recognition and interactions
  • Molecular engineering and design
  • Molecular evolution 

Special Requirements

Students are required to supply and wear a lab coat and safety glasses while in the teaching lab.

There will be an evening Test, the date and time for which will published in the BIOSCI 350 Canvas course.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures and/or tutorials per week and 3 hours of labs per fortnight. This means you should plan to spend 5.5 hours of work per week on reading and thinking about the content, on assignments and lab reports, and/or test and exam preparation. If you choose to not attend lectures you miss out on active learning and discussions held in the lectures, and will need to spend at least 8.5 hours a week in independent learning.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs to complete components of the course.
We strongly recommend lecture attendance, but they will also be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

We do not recommend a single textbook for this course. The lecturers will provide suggested or required reading for each topic.
