BIOSCI 701 : Practical Approaches in Genomics

Course Prescription

Genomics provides insights into the diversity, evolution, adaptation and function of organisms. This course focuses on the practical aspects of genomics as it can be applied across taxa and topics such as conservation, health and ecosystem function. A sound understanding of BIOSCI 322, 351 or 355 or equivalent is assumed.

Course Overview

This course is useful for students planning a career in genomics based research or application. The course will teach:

  • Practical skills in bash scripting
  • Hands-on experience working in a high-performance computing environment
  • Skills in genome analysis, including: genome assembly; read mapping; population genomics
  • How to determine and interpret genomic features of bacteria that predict certain lifestyles or habitats
  • Experience with common tools and techniques that are applicable to the study of genomes as diverse as bacteria and mammals

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify a research question related to genomics (Capability 2)
  2. Analyse and interpret genomic data (Capability 1 and 2)
  3. Be able to troubleshoot bioinformatic workflows (Capability 3)
  4. Identify approaches suited to the analysis of prokaryotic or eukaryotic genomes (Capability 1 and 2)
  5. Analyse and interpret both whole genome and reduced representation genomic data (Capability 1 and 2)
  6. Communicate methodology choices and findings in writing and orally (Capability 4)

Special Requirements

Must complete lab practical work and compulsory participation in group presentations.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 3 hour lab, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments per week.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs and tutorials to complete or receive credit for components of the course.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

A remote version of the course can be made available to students located overseas because of border restrictions, or those with an exemption to study remotely.
