BIOSCI 739 : Dialogues in Biology

Course Prescription

Social, ethical and other philosophical issues in the life sciences will be debated and explored. Topics may include: animal and environmental ethics, conservation and biodiversity, the history and philosophy of science, ethical and commercial issues underpinning science, scientific publishing and advocacy, medical and agricultural biotechnology.

Course Overview

BIOSCI739 consists of weekly two-hour seminars introducing themes in the philosophy of biology. Students are expected to do course reading prior to each seminar in preparation for class discussion. At the conclusion of a block of seminars students will be expected to submit a written essay assignment on one part of the seminars, where you demonstrate a working knowledge and reasoned opinion of the topic. There are three essays each worth 20% due throughout the semester. The final exam is worth 40%. Students will be trainined in writing essays.

This course is for students who are interested in how biological science sits within wider society. There is a strong emphasis on class discussion and interaction. For many of the issues we discuss there is no clear resolution or direction on the topic, and what can be most important is the dialogue that arises from consideration of the topics. In some cases members of the class, or even the lecturers, may have a view that is different to yours, and what is most important is that we acknowledge each other’s views and understand why people may have different views, and where conciliation, compromise and agreement are all possible.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and describe the underlying philosophical issues of a biological topic (Capability 1, 2 and 5)
  2. Recognise, analyse and evaluate the underlying values in a biological topic (Capability 2, 4 and 6)
  3. Be able to undertake reasoned analysis of a controversial biological topic (Capability 3, 4 and 6)

Special Requirements

It is expected that students will contribute to class discussions.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 20 hours of lectures, 40 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 60 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled seminars of the course.
Lectures will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events such as group discussions.
Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable/block delivery.

A remote version of the course can be made available to students located overseas because of border restrictions, or those with an exemption to study remotely.

Student Feedback

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.

Your feedback helps to improve the course and its delivery for all students.

Students will be given specific training in essay writing skills.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
