BIOSCI 761 : Research Practice

Course Prescription

Students will complete an advanced literature review to produce a research output that applies their knowledge to a novel context or application. Students will develop skills to synthesise and communicate their research output including the significance, potential limitations and context within the wider discipline to an academic audience using both written and verbal platforms.

Course Overview

BIOSCI 761 is taken by all PGDipSci students who intend to take the MSc thesis course BIOSCI 796. At the completion of this course you should have acquired both generic research skills (through participation in group activities and workshops) as well as a detailed understanding of your chosen research topic. Classes consist of workshops, associated writing assignments, presentation of a seminar describing the proposed research and a final thesis proposal explaining the purpose and significance of the proposed MSc research project, as well as describing the experimental plan.

Special Requirements

Full-day attendance at the seminar day which takes place during the semester break.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. The course is designed that, on average, a students may expect to spend:

Workshops/Content time: 6 hours

Seminar day: 7 hours

Reading about the content, self-directed study, preparing seminar and assignments: 135 hours

Please consider that these are general guidelines; each project and researcher have different requirements, so the time spent  on each aspect of this course will depend on the individual. Managing this variability throughout the course will prepare students for future work including that required for dissertations and internships.

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including workshops and students seminars to receive credit for components of the course.
Workshops and other learning activities will not be available as recordings.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
