Course Prescription

The science and practice of strategic thinking and entrepreneurial action. Examines the logics and processes of opportunity recognition and competitive strategy formation and implementation in national and global contexts for a variety of enterprise types. A case-intensive course requiring extensive analysis of business situations and the preparation and communication of pragmatic, 'real world' recommendations.

Course Overview

This course takes a managerial approach to understand the art of strategic thinking, address the dynamic nature of competition  and gain insights into the strategy process at the business, corporate and international levels. Students will gain skills in critical-thinking, analysing and interpreting, and making strategic decision making based on thorough environmental analysis of an organisation.  Contemporary themes of sustainability, innovation, value creation, mega-trends, and internationalisation will be explored through this course which will enhance students’ employability.

Prerequisite: 60 points from BUSADMIN 761-764 and an additional 30 points from schedule of the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Restriction: BUSADMIN 729, 778

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Evaluate the processes of strategy analysis and formulation as they apply to local and international organisations. (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Evaluate strategic options at corporate, business, network, and functional-level to ensure alignment among such levels, given complex and dynamic environments. (Capability 1 and 3)
  3. Contribute to a group to develop and justify appropriate assumptions leading to decision making logics in order to deal with the complexity and ambiguity experienced by companies. (Capability 3 and 4.3)
  4. Recognise and interpret stakeholders’ expectations, assess internal and external environments that can help in crafting feasible strategies. (Capability 1, 3 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 15 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, the class will meet for 3 hours each week. Class time will be used for a combination of lectures and applied case studies. In addition to attending classes, students should use an additional 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 9 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including presentations and test to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings but other learning activities such as presentations and class discussions will not be available as recordings.
Test details will be posted on Canvas.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
