BUSAN 302 : Big Data and Machine Learning

Course Prescription

Provides essential skills to build data-driven digital innovations that augment business decisions. This involves identifying problems faced by different groups of individuals from different spheres of life, analysing the problem space and data needs, building a prototype for a selected design, and using machine learning tools and cloud-based big data analytics.

Course Overview

This course aims to acquire knowledge to apply appropriate Big Data, Machine Learning techniques to gain insights into various organisational problems. The focus of this course is to provide fundamental background knowledge of the theory and approaches of machine learning and develop programming skills in Python for practical application to solve machine learning problems. Hands-on experience of machine learning tools will be gained in the labs with opportunities and encouragement to explore other tools.

Prerequisite: 15 points from BUSAN 201, INFOMGMT 292, INFOSYS 222 Restriction: INFOMGMT 393, INFOSYS 330

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Acquire knowledge about the fundamental principles of Big Data and Machine Learning (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Understand and use Python to work with data and apply machine learning tools. (Capability 2, 3, 5.1 and 5.2)
  3. Develop Supervised and Unsupervised machine learning algorithms (Capability 2, 3, 5.1 and 5.2)
  4. Develop and design a prototype solution in a collaborative and networked environment using Machine learning tools. (Capability 2, 3, 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3)
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of of a solution to a decision problem by recognising and applying sustainable practices. (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect two 2 hours of lectures, a 2-hour tutorial, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 2 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation per week.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs to receive credit for components of the course.

Attendance on campus is required for the quiz.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
