Course Prescription

Explores current management practices and the challenges of managing in contemporary organisations. Examines strategies for effective management and leadership to achieve performance and productivity improvements including change management processes.

Course Overview

Providing an overarching context for the course, students will be asked to consider what management looks like today and why it continues to matter. This course offers a comprehensive overview of managing people and organisations, equipping students with essential skills and knowledge in key areas of organisational behavior and management theory. Beginning with an introduction to foundational concepts in managing people and organisations, the course moves into core management theories that provide frameworks for effective leadership and decision-making. Students will explore the importance of organisational culture, examine motivation theories, and learn effective communication strategies. Later, the course delves into group dynamics, team building, and ethical decision-making, emphasising the critical role of ethics in organisational choices. The course culminates in a focus on leadership and an exploration of megatrends—examining how technological advancements and societal shifts are reshaping the future of work. Through group-based discussions in class and critical reflective assessments, students will gain a nuanced understanding of managing in today’s dynamic organisational landscapes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Evaluate theories and frameworks of management in order to identify contextually appropriate management techniques. (Capability 1.2 and 4)
  2. Identify and analyse and reflect on effective workplace behaviors from multiple perspectives (Capability 4 and 7)
  3. Analyse complex organisational problems and determine managerial actions to improve outcomes and mitigate organisational harm (Capability 4)
  4. Apply professional communication skills (Capability 6.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 15 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 6-7 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4-5 hours of work on assignments, alongside class-time.
