Course Prescription

Develops an understanding of the contemporary marketing function and focuses on marketing decision-making, marketing strategy development and tactics. Examines the impact of new technology.

Course Overview

BUSMAN 702 (Contemporary Marketing) will introduce students to core marketing concepts and seek to aid and extend students' understanding via interactive classes, readings, and applied exercises. BUSMAN 702 takes a very broad and "big picture" approach to contemporary marketing theories and concepts, ensuring that students acquire the requisite disciplinary knowledge to support their future careers and with the Digital Marketing specialisation. In coming to lectures well-prepared, students will be able to consolidate their understanding from the readings (and other online content) and then apply this knowledge through application exercises and discussions. A real-world assignment will provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Evaluate marketing management theories, models and frameworks that underpin marketing practice to make actionable decisions in consideration of social, environmental and ethical pressures. (Capability 1, 2 and 6)
  2. Identify and apply consumer-centric marketing interventions that include problem-formulation, evaluation of alternatives, and recommendations. (Capability 2, 3 and 4.2)
  3. Integrate various theories, models and frameworks in order to develop an effective marketing strategy within complex business environments. (Capability 3, 4.2 and 6)
  4. Apply solution-seeking skills to develop and design appropriate marketing strategies for complex marketing decisions. (Capability 2, 3 and 4.2)
  5. Communicate and work professionally and effectively in a team. (Capability 4.3 and 5.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 15 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of class, 6-7 hours of reading, watching, and thinking about the content and 4-5 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including class to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities will be available online.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
