Course Prescription

Examines the application of contemporary strategic management frameworks, processes and practices. Evaluates alternative approaches to the development of coherent solutions for an organisation’s strategic challenges.

Course Overview

The goal of the course is to provide an overview of strategic management. Participants will be expected to critically analyse the strategic challenges/opportunities faced by organisation using appropriate theory, frameworks, and tools. In addition, participants will be expected to evaluate strategic options, taking into account the organisational and environmental contexts, and potential risks. To achieve this goal, this course introduces relevant theories, frameworks, tools, concepts, and ideas that strategists can use. The course also uses participative discussions and group work to allow participants to explore these and how they may be used to support strategic decision making.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and understand key theories, models and frameworks underpinning strategic management. (Capability 1, 2 and 6)
  2. Critically evaluate information obtained by applying relevant strategic management theories, models and frameworks. (Capability 1, 2 and 4.2)
  3. Conduct strategic analysis by integrating various theories, models and frameworks while demonstrating critical and creative thinking. (Capability 1, 3 and 5.1)
  4. Collaborate to solve business cases using relevant theories, models and frameworks. (Capability 3, 4.1 and 4.3)
  5. Summarize and communicate the analysis and recommendations in a professionally presented manner. (Capability 4.2, 4.3 and 5.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 15 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 30 hours of class, 60 hours of reading and thinking about the content, and 60 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including classes to achieve all the learning in this course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including discussions will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.
