Course Prescription

Examines factors that affect the value of real and financial assets and explores the relation between risk and return and its implications for asset values and the cost of capital. Includes coverage of models and techniques used for the valuation of real and financial assets.

Course Overview

This course focuses on understanding how financial markets work. It examines key relationships and processes that determine financial returns and asset values. An understanding of these relationships and processes is critical for making sound financial decisions that maximise value while managing risk. The course emphasises practical applications and tools relevant to corporate financial decision making. In addition to presentation of theory and concepts, the course incorporates case studies, discussions and financial modelling.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Analyse the dynamically changing corporate ESG objectives and contrast the traditional shareholder model with the modern multi-stakeholder structure. (Capability 5.2 and 6)
  2. Critically analyse the relationship between risk and return in the context of finance and examine its implications for discount rates and asset values (Capability 1 and 2)
  3. Apply financial models to estimate the cost of capital and value of different types of financial assets. (Capability 3 and 4.2)
  4. Apply critical thinking to propose strategies to manage financial risk using different tools and analyse the value of associated positions. (Capability 2 and 3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 7.5 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved for each point of the course that they are enrolled in. This is a total of 75 learning hours overall for this course.

The course has five class sessions. These will mainly involve a mixture of formal lecturing, discussion, case studies and problem solving. 

To pass the course, an overall passing mark is required on the aggregate of the three assessments.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures and workshops to complete the learning for the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including labs and workshops will not be available as recordings.

The course is not expected to include live online events.

The activities for the course are scheduled as block delivery.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

The optional textbook for this course is: Brealey, R.A., Myers, S.C., & Marcus, A.J. (2019). Fundamentals of corporate finance (10th ed). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Education.

A reading list will be made available to students. This will consist of items such as company financial statements, industry reports, journal articles, practitioner reports and websites. The reading list will specify whether each item is required or optional reading. 

Students are also expected to bring a hand-held scientific calculator to class.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
