Course Prescription

Explores the factors that enable organisations to make and shape markets, drawing on the transdisciplinary science of systems theory. Develops skills to devise and implement strategies on a market or ecosystem level in uncertain and complex contexts.

Course Overview

This course is developed to address the significant shift to a new business world, where companies are facing a very different reality due to digital transformation, environmental and social pressures. In such complex business environments companies need to decide if they want to shape or being shaped by their market. The course focuses on three main shifts in strategic thinking: (1) from firm focus to context focus, where the relevant context is a firm’s definition of the market; (2) from competing and winning to value creation and cooperation; and (3) from analysis, prediction, and planning to non-predictive strategizing and experimentation. The students will end up with a toolbox for making and shaping markets.

  1. Assess a firms' market shaping potential and market shaping strategiesrecommendations and/or solutions to market related issues. (Capability 1, 2 and 5.1)
  2. Critically evaluate how firms can shape their markets toward more environmentally sustainable market practices. (Capability 2, 3, 5.2 and 6)
  3. Persuade managers and entrepreneurs based on justified recommendations to make and shape their markets.purposes (e.g. informing, persuading, justifying). (Capability 1, 3 and 5.1)
  4. Demonstrate academic writing skills and professional presentation skills. (Capability 4.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 7.5 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per course for  each  point of the course that they are enrolled in.

Class time will be used for a combination of lectures, group discussions and group work where the groups use selected tools to solve various real-world business problems.  

The students will also do a case assignment, where they apply any of the ideas or frameworks introduced in the course on their own business situations.

We will have 20 hours of class time in 5 blocks. You can expect each block to be balanced around 50% lecture and 50% team-based learning. 20 hours are allocated for reading and preparation time and 35 hours for reflections and working on the assignments.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures and workshops to receive credit for the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including labs and workshops will not be available as recordings.
The course is not expected to include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as block delivery.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

There is no required textbook for this course. Readings will consist of a selection of articles. Links to these articles are available on the Reading List, which can be accessed through Canvas.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
