CHEM 730 : Modern Methods for the Synthesis of Bioactive Molecules

Course Prescription

The use of modern methods for the construction of complex molecules with an emphasis on carbon-carbon bond formation and control of stereochemistry. Principles and practice of synthesis design based on retrosynthetic analysis. Each student will present and discuss a recent synthesis of a complex bioactive organic compound. No formal prerequisite, but knowledge of organic chemistry at the level covered in CHEM 330 will be assumed.

Course Overview

This advanced course builds on the core organic synthesis principles taught at the undergraduate level. You will gain a strong understanding of the rational design and efficient synthesis of complex organic molecules, including strategies and reagents for asymmetric synthesis, synthons, and disconnection patterns. CHEM730 provides the foundations for postgraduate research study and careers in diverse fields including medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, healthcare, agrochemicals, molecular optics, and smart materials.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Evaluate and apply appropriate models to predict stereochemistry (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  2. Evaluate the role of reagents in asymmetric synthesis and predict stereochemical outcome (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  3. Be able to explain the importance of asymmetric synthesis and concept of retrosynthetic analysis (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  4. Describe and explain the strategies available for asymmetric synthesis (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  5. Identify and critically evaluate various synthons and disconnection patternsTo perform retrosynthetic analysis (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  6. Communicate modern organic chemistry strategies and research in group presentations (Capability 1, 6, 7 and 8)

A student must pass both the theory component and the seminar component to gain an overall pass. The theory component is composed of term tests. The seminar component is composed of a presentation.

  • 84 hours of work on preparation for tests and group seminar 
  • 24 hours of attendance at student seminars

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled lectures 
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars will be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events
Attendance on campus is required for the tests and seminar program
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

A sound knowledge of undergraduate organic chemistry (CHEM330) will be required
