Course Prescription

The nature and function of design – process conception, alternatives, constraints and their simulation. Raw materials, safety and environmental considerations. Flow sheet representation of information. Separation systems, heat exchanger networks, and specification of equipment. Process economics and project documentation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the nature and function of design (Capability 3.1)
  2. Develop an initial economic feasibility assessment of a simple process incorporating environmental and ethical considerations (Capability 4.1 and 5.1)
  3. Develop an initial flowsheet for a new process design considering alternatives and incorporating separation systems, heat exchanger networks, and specification of equipment. (Capability 3.1, 4.1 and 5.1)
  4. Simulate a process design in a commercial process simulator (e.g., HYSYS) (Capability 3.1, 4.1 and 5.1)
  5. Perform an initial safety assessment, and an initial hazards identification and consequence analysis (Capability 3.1, 4.1 and 5.1)
  6. Communicate engineering knowledge in the form of written documentation (e.g., block diagrams, PFDs, reports) and oral presentations (Capability 3.1 and 6.1)
  7. Establish and monitor team’s organizational structure and promote team effectiveness through individual action (Capability 6.1 and 7.1)
  8. Plan and manage engineering activities within time and resource constraints (Capability 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1)

Please note that Individual Assignments will include key lectures that students must attend, and group assignments will include peer assessment.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For each week in this course, you can expect 4 hours of class lectures and discussion, 1 hour of reading and thinking about the content, and 5 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled lecture and in class tutorial activities
Lectures will be available as recordings. 
The course will include live online events including group discussions.
Attendance on campus is required for a test.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Health & Safety

Students are expected to adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Health and Safety section of the Engineering Undergraduate Handbook. No laboratory workshops or labs.
However, the course includes significant HSE learnings.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Changes or improvements to the course that will be made in the coming year based on feedback from students this year.

In 2024 we will be clearer and firmer re deadlines and grading as a response to student feedback from 2023.  We will also investigate having the plant tour earlier if Methanex can accommodate that.

Academic Integrity
