Course Prescription

Application of simulation for understanding industry 4.0 focusing on digital twin and process control. Includes rigorous treatment of modelling and control fundamentals, advanced classical control and multiple loop control. Individual research is undertaken to apply advanced concepts and methods in modern chemical processes.

Course Overview

The course introduces students to mathematical theory, modern practice and industrial technology of process control. Students will practice the theory through process simulation software (HYSYS) to investigate process dynamics and tune controllers for unit operations and plants.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Build dynamic process models with a commercial process simulator (Capability 1.1, 3.1 and 4.1)
  2. Explain process measurement and control hardware fundamentals (Capability 3.2)
  3. Analyze the modelling and control fundamentals of single input, single output processes: basic and advanced feedback controls (Capability 3.1, 4.1, 4.2 and 5.1)
  4. Analyse and create unit operation control and plant-wide controls (Capability 4.2 and 5.1)
  5. Anaylze and evaluate multivariable control schemes (Capability 3.1, 4.1, 4.2 and 5.1)

  • A passing mark is 50% or higher, according to UoA policy.
  • Students must sit the exam to pass the course. Otherwise, a DNS (did not sit) result will be returned.

  • Written workshop reports must be submitted via the Canvas assignment page by 12 noon on the due data or late penaltes will apply.
  • The penalty for lateness is 5 marks for each day (or part of day thereof) in which the digital copy of the assessment is submitted late. For the avoidance of doubt, penalties are applied on a calendar day basis (not a 24 hour basis). For the purposes on online-only submission, Saturday and Sundays count as calendar days.

Teaching & Learning Methods

Lectures: Lectures are the foundation of the course, where core concepts and theories are introduced. These sessions will include not only explanations of principles but also real-world examples and demonstrations to make the material relevant. Students are encouraged to ask questions and engage actively to deepen their understanding.

Tutorials and Workshops: Tutorials offer a hands-on approach to reinforce lecture content. Here, students will apply process dynamis and control concepts through HYSYS simulation models, working individually or in small groups. Tutorials are interactive, allowing students to clarify doubts, gain practical insights, and develop analytical skills.


Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 22 hours of lectures, 22 hours of tutorials, 40 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 66 hours of work on assignments and test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete/receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars/tutorials will be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.
Attendance on campus is required for the test.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

We received quite positive feedback about the workshops after we modified the manuals based on previous students' feedback.  Some suggestions from the 2024 SET indicate that students would like more support with lecture materials and tests (i.e. providing more past test questions and answers). We will provide additional tutorials in the 2025 teaching period.

Academic Integrity
