CLINED 705 : Simulation and Clinical Skills Teaching

Course Prescription

Theory and practice around the use of simulators in clinical education. Addresses underlying theory, research, course design, acquisition of clinical skills, scenario-based learning, scenario design, simulator programming, and feedback after simulated performance.

Course Overview

The course comprises five modules addressing the following areas: practical aspects of running simulation-based education sessions; skills and resources need to run simulation-based courses; why and when to use simulation in clinical education; 
theoretical underpinnings of simulation-based education; and evaluation of simulation-based educational activities.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify where in their curriculum, simulation-based learning and skills labs would most effectively address the set learning objectives. (Capability 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 4.1)
  2. Describe the different types of simulators and skills trainers and how to choose the appropriate device and method. (Capability 1.2 and 3.1)
  3. Design effective lessons using simulation or procedural trainers. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3)
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of their simulation or clinical skills teaching. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and 2.2)
  5. Evaluate the use of simulation-based assessment in their own context. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 5.2 and 5.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

Delivery Mode


This course is fully online however there is a two-days workshop on 26 & 27 July 2021.
Study materials are uploaded on Canvas.
This course runs to the University semester and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
