Course Prescription

Takes a broad look across essential topics in clinical education of relevance to all clinical teachers involved in teaching with patients, assessing students and planning lessons. Application to practice and peer observation are key components of this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Draw upon a functional understanding of the theories and principles underlying everyday clinical education activities in teaching, learning, and assessment. (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 5.1 and 6.1)
  2. Design, conduct, and evaluate key clinical education activities in teaching, learning, and assessment based on reflective knowledge, skills, and first-hand experience gained during the course. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 6.1 and 6.2)
  3. Demonstrate competencies in self-reflection, peer review, and the critical appraisal and application of teaching theories and sholarly literature in medical education. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 5.1, 5.2 and 6.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 0 hours of lectures, a 15-hour tutorial, 70 approx. hours of reading and thinking about the content and 65 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Based on student feedback, we changed assignment due dates from Friday evenings to the following Mondays to allow more flexibility in the way that students organize their learning. We also added an additional session to clarify assignment requirements in the face-to-face workshop.
