Course Prescription

Develops the fundamental knowledge and clinical skills necessary to perform a range of advanced radiographic imaging examinations such as mammography, angiography, interventional procedures, and computed tomography (CT), incorporating research skills for an evidence based and patient-centred approach.

Course Overview

This course enables the student to provide evidence of their clinical competence in assisting with performing a range of advanced radiographic examinations such as mammography, angiography, interventional procedures, and computed tomography (at a novice level), recognising the importance of synthesising theory and clinical practice elements. Emphasis will be placed on the student being a patient advocate in the clinical setting. 

The course is delivered primarily at Grafton campus and will be based on a blended delivery model, with supporting resources provided online via the University of Auckland’s learning management system Canvas. Students will also be required to complete a six-week clinical placement block during which time they will compile evidence of their clinical learning and experience within an electronic portfolio. Clinical competency will be assessed through practical assessments during the clinical placement. Academic learning is expected to inform clinical practice and enhance levels of clinical competency.

This course is compulsory for the BMedImag(Hons) programme. Only students admitted to this programme are eligible to enrol in this course. Part II of the BMedImag(Hons) programme is to be completed to the satisfaction of Senate or its representative before a student is permitted to enrol in this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate clinical competence (at a novice level) in assisting with performing advanced radiographic imaging examinations such as mammography, angiography, interventional procedures, and computed tomography (CT). (Capability 1.1 and 5.1)

This course is 100% internally assessed. An aggregated mark of 50% or more is required to successfully pass this course. Resubmission of failed assessments is not permitted. 

In addition, the Clinical Portfolio is a course hurdle requirement, meaning that this assessment must be passed in order to pass the course.

Penalties for excessive word count and/or late submission (without prior written approval for an extension) will be applied in accordance with the 'Medical Imaging Assessment Requirements and Presentation Criteria' document.

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines, a standard 15-point course represents approximately 150 hours of study.

As a clinical course, students will be required to participate in a six-week clinical placement block as part of this course. To facilitate the attainment of clinical competency, full attendance at clinical placement blocks is compulsory in order to obtain the minimum number of clinical hours required for registration with the MRTB.

In addition to the clinical block, students will be required to participate in the following activities:

  • Tutorials (10 hours)
  • Set readings and learning tasks provided on Canvas (10 hours)
  • Assignments, self-directed learning and reflective practice (30 hours)

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs to complete components of the course.
Tutorials will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including labs will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test and OSCE.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Students will also be directed to a large selection of other readings and resources. These will be able to be accessed online via the course website on Canvas and the Philson Library databases.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Students who responded to the course SET evaluations in 2020 indicated that they enjoyed bringing research into this course. Having PowerPoint presentations uploaded before the lecture helped in their preparation for the class.  The flexibility of the course lectures over Zoom was helpful.  Students would like more practice quizzes, more feedback on assessments and advanced information about the research project in Part II of the course. Students also felt it would be useful to have a mobile X-ray machine on-campus to assist with practising positioning. A mobile machine has recently been acquired for use on-campus.  

Other Information

Communication
All official communication to a student will be sent to the student’s current University email address (username@aucklanduni.ac.nz) and the student is responsible for ensuring that any desired forwarding to other addresses is in place and operating correctly. Staff will not be responsible for any consequences if students fail to read and respond to University correspondence in a timely manner.

Students are encouraged to use the course ‘Discussion’ forum on Canvas as much as possible for communication with staff and other students. Email may be used for more private matters. Email communication to University staff and supervisors must be sent from the student’s University email address.

As a general rule, students are advised to log-on at least twice a week. Logging on regularly allows regular checking of 'Announcements' as well as reading and responding to messages from peers on 'Discussions'.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
