Course Prescription

Extends the fundamental knowledge and clinical skills necessary to perform a range of routine and non-routine radiographic examinations, including specialised views and adaptive techniques. Provides the knowledge and clinical skills to perform a range of advanced radiographic imaging examinations with a patient centred focus, incorporating an evidence-based approach.

Course Overview

This course enables the student to provide evidence of their clinical competence of radiographic imaging of the skull, facial bones shoulder and spine, including performing adaptive radiography (at advanced beginner level). In addition, this course enables the student to provide evidence of their clinical competence in performing and assisting with performing a range of advanced radiographic and specialised examinations, recognising the importance of synthesising theory and clinical practice elements. Students will be introduced to paediatric, fluoroscopic and mobile radiographic examinations with emphasis placed on the importance of synthesising theory and clinical practice elements whilst advocating for the patient.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate clinical competence (at an advanced beginner level) in performing radiographic examinations of the skull, facial bones, shoulder, spine, as well as and paediatric, fluoroscopic and mobile radiographic imaging techniques (at a novice level). (Capability 1 and 3)
  2. Demonstrate clinical competence in adaptive radiography (at advanced beginner level) and assisting with performing advanced radiographic and specialised examinations such as interventional procedures, and computed tomography (CT). (Capability 2, 3 and 4)
  3. Communicate with patients in a professional manner, recognising and adapting to a variety of social, cultural and ethical perspectives. (Capability 1, 6 and 8)
  4. Demonstrate patient-centred care and apply disciplinary knowledge to advocate for the patient in clinical practice. (Capability 1, 2 and 4)
  5. Apply an evidence-based approach to clinical decision-making and problem solving with respect to patient autonomy. (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  6. Evaluate image quality, normal anatomical features and pathological appearances on radiographic images and communicate findings where appropriate. (Capability 4, 6 and 7)
  7. Demonstrate accountability and personal insight and reflect on the development of own clinical practice. (Capability 2 and 8)

This course is 100% internally assessed. An aggregated mark of 50% or more is required to successfully pass this course. Resubmission of failed assessments is not permitted. In addition, the Clinical Portfolio is a course hurdle requirement, meaning that this assessment must be passed in order to pass the course. Penalties for excessive word count and/or late submission (without prior written approval for an extension) will be applied in accordance with the 'Medical Imaging Assessment Requirements and Presentation Criteria' document.

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines, a standard 30-point course represents approximately 300 hours of study. As a clinical course, students will be required to participate in a 12 week clinical placement block. To facilitate the attainment of clinical competency, full attendance at clinical placement blocks is compulsory in order to obtain the minimum number of clinical hours required for registration with the MRTB.

In addition to the clinical block, students will be required to participate in the following activities: Tutorials (20 hours)

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs to complete components of the course. Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including labs will not be available as recordings.

The course will not include live online events.

Attendance on campus is required for the tests.

Students will also be directed to a large selection of readings and other resources that will be able to be accessed online via the course website on Canvas and the Philson Library databases.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Students who responded to the course SET evaluation in 2023 indicated that enjoyed the interactive lecture sessions with quizzes to test their knowledge.  Students also enjoyed the session in the clinical skills lab.  The use quizzes and interactive teaching and learning through discussion of images will continue in the next iteration of the course.  Additional activities in the clinical skills lab will be added to this course. 

Other Information

Communication
All ocial communication to a student will be sent to the student’s current University email address (username@aucklanduni.ac.nz) and the student is responsible for ensuring that any desired forwarding to other addresses is in place and operating correctly. Sta will not be responsible for any consequences if students fail to read and respond to University correspondence in a timely manner.
Students are encouraged to use the course ‘Discussion’ forum on Canvas as much as possible for communication with sta and other students. Email may be used for more private matters. Email
communication to University staff and supervisors must be sent from the student’s University email address.
As a general rule, students are advised to log-on at least twice a week. Logging on regularly allows regular checking of 'Announcements' as well as reading and responding to messages from peers on 'Discussions'.

Academic Integrity
