Course Prescription

Provides students with a sound understanding of CT technology and its application including radiation safety and dose reduction. Addresses normal and abnormal Computed Tomography (CT) imaging appearances, protocol selection and modification, in relation to a range of standard clinical applications. Students will develop the knowledge, competencies, skills and attitudes needed to enable clinical competence in both academic and professional capability in CT practice and application to clinical practice.

Course Overview

This course aims to cultivate a critically questioning approach to CT imaging practice. An emphasis will be placed on integrating theory and clinical practice elements in order to facilitate clinical competence. The course will expect students to assimilate the underlying physical principles of CT with relevant biological processes and imaging appearances. Learning activities and assessments are designed to support the development of CT clinical competency.

The course is delivered fully online by distance via the University of Auckland’s learning management system ‘Canvas’. It incorporates a range of learning approaches including videos, webpages, links to the library databases and resources, and utilising online technologies to promote shared learning opportunities. Academic learning is expected to inform clinical practice and enhance levels of clinical competency.

This course is compulsory for the PGDipHSc(Nuclear Medicine), PGCertHSc(PET-CT) and BMedImag(Hons) programmes. Students enrolled in the PGDipHSc/PGCertHSc (Medical Imaging) programmes may also choose this course to contribute 15 points towards the MEDIMAGE/CLINIMAG point requirements.

 The course is also suitable to be undertaken as a one-off course (Certificate of Proficiency) for registered Medical Imaging Technologists, Nuclear Medicine Technologists and Radiation Therapists for their Continuing Professional Development (CPD). While this course has no pre-requisites or restricted course requirements, departmental approval is required for all other students and a concession request must be submitted when applying to enrol in this course. Access to a clinical CT department is highly recommended.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Critically analyse and integrate the principles and technology of CT to enable image optimisation. (Capability 3 and 4)
  2. Analyse radiation dose optimisation and radiation safety within the CT environment. (Capability 2, 3 and 4)
  3. Critically evaluate CT images for diagnostic quality and develop the skills to differentiate and explain normal and abnormal appearances. (Capability 3, 4 and 6)
  4. Make informed clinical judgements regarding the selection of imaging protocols, iodinated contrast and post processing 3D manipulation, for a range of standard CT examinations, investigating specific regions and pathologies. (Capability 6 and 8)
  5. Apply an evidence-based approach to clinical decision-making and problem solving. (Capability 4 and 8)

Workload Expectations

Following University workload guidelines, a standard 15-point course represents approximately 150 hours of study. This equates to approximately 12 hours per week and may be broken down as follows:

  • Set readings relevant to CT theory and clinical practice (30 hours)
  • Other resources provided on Canvas e.g. videos, websites (20 hours)
  • Assignments and self-directed learning (100 hours)

Where possible, study material will be available at course commencement and more may be released progressively throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

In the recent SET Evaluation, the students' responses indicated that they were satisfied with the quality of this course. The most helpful aspects were Zoom assignment planning sessions, well-structured weekly content and assignment feedforward/back. The variety of resources was appreciated.

Other Information

Communication
All official communication to a student will be sent to the student’s current University email address (username@aucklanduni.ac.nz) and the student is responsible for ensuring that any desired forwarding to other addresses is in place and operating correctly. Staff will not be responsible for any consequences if students fail to read and respond to University correspondence in a timely manner.

Students are encouraged to use the course ‘Discussion’ forum on Canvas as much as possible for communication with staff and other students. Email may be used for more private matters. Email communication to University staff and supervisors must be sent from the student’s University email address.

As a general rule, students are advised to log-on at least twice a week. Logging on regularly allows regular checking of 'Announcements' as well as reading and responding to messages from peers on 'Discussions'.

Academic Integrity

The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework, tests and examinations as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
