COMMS 207 : Communication Research Methods

Course Prescription

Introduces students to a variety of research methods in communication studies. Students learn about the foundations of, and approaches to qualitative and quantitative methods and acquire an array of techniques to collect data, such as individual and focus group interviews, participant observation, and surveys, as well as different forms of data analysis.

Course Overview

This course introduces students to key research methods in the study of human communication. It helps students to learn about the foundations of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and to acquire an array of techniques related to data collection ( such as questionnaires, interviews, ethnographic observations, and digital methods) and data analysis (such as coding and content analysis). It is also designed to help students develop their own research project, applying what they learned from the course to their own exploration of communication problems in society.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand and critically evaluate major research paradigms in communication studies (Capability 3, 4 and 6)
  2. Develop and demonstrate a deeper understanding about the logics of reasoning and ways of knowing in qualitative and quantitative research (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 8)
  3. Design an independent research project (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  4. Gain skills in crafting research questions, conducting interviews, and developing coding techniques (Capability 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  5. Critically evaluate communication research, assessing its rigour and understanding its significance and application (Capability 3, 4 and 8)
  6. Develop and demonstrate the ability to select the suitable methods for conducting communication research (Capability 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1 hour seminar/workshop, 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on reading and assignments. 

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials to receive credit for components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars/workshops will not be available as recordings.

The course will not include live online events including group discussions/tutorials. 

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2024.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
