Course Prescription
Course Overview
It's hard to foresee how the world will change over the coming decades. But we do know that changing technologies will probably play a significant role in shaping the future. In this course we will examine a range of perspectives on how new technologies could transform the world (for better or for worse). This course brings together insights from the fields of Communication and Futures Studies to help us understand and navigate competing claims about where new and emerging technologies may take us. While topics may vary from year-to-year in response to new technological developments, the course will foreground issues such as: the future of the Internet; surveillance technologies; cities of the future; and artificial intelligence. Guided by the principle that the future depends significantly on the way we imagine and discuss it today, we will examine competing and diverse perspectives on the kind of future we should be building and the kind of future we should be trying to prevent. This is a new course that will be delivered for the first time in Semester 2, 2022. Further details will be added subsequently. Teaching delivery will include in-person classes supplemented by online materials. However, the course is not available for remote study.

Learning Outcomes
- Identify and evaluate contested visions of the future in respect of digital technology (Capability 1, 2, 4 and 5)
- Demonstrate understanding of the ways in which envisioned futures enable and constrain practice in the present (Capability 2, 4 and 5)
- Apply futures thinking to analysis of contemporary technology practices and institutions (Capability 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8)
- Communicate effectively about the possible futures and their relationship to action in the present (Capability 3, 6 and 7)
Workload Expectations
This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.
For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 5 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 2 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.
Delivery Mode
Campus Experience
Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including interactive and in-person tutorials will not be available as recordings.
The course may include some live online events including group discussions.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2024.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.
Student Feedback
At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.
Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.
This is a new course offered for the first time in 2022.
Academic Integrity

The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
