Course Prescription

Covers security features supported by the different platforms for smart devices. Provides an overview of the most popular OS platforms in the market and focuses on security for Android and iOS. Recommended preparation: COMPSCI 340

Course Overview

This course covers security features supported by the different platforms for smart devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets). It provides an overview of the most popular OS platforms in the market. The course has been divided into two parts. The first part of the course focuses on state-of-the-art in security for Android and iOS. The second part consists of student seminars based on recent research articles published at top-notch venues. The course also has a practical component, i.e., a group project, where students get self-organised in teams and in order to (i) develop and secure Android apps, (ii) reverse engineer Android apps developed and secured by other groups, and then (iii) present in a group how they managed to secure their app and reverse engineer apps secured by other groups. Finally, there is a final exam based on lectures, seminars, and group project.

  1. Give basic advice on securing smart devices (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  2. Criticise and appreciate technical literature on mobile security (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
  3. Demonstrate technical skills to increase security of smart devices (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  4. Prepare and deliver an oral presentation on an advanced topic in mobile security (Capability 1, 2, 4 and 5)
  5. Develop novel problem solving and research-informed ideas (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 36 hours of lectures including seminar and project presentations. It is a research-oriented course.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including seminars and project presentations to receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars and project presentations will be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events including seminars and projects.
Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

The learning resources are mainly based on research articles published in recent top-notch security venues.

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.
