COMPSCI 734 : Web, Mobile and Enterprise Computing

Course Prescription

Examines advanced and emerging software architectures at the confluence of XML, web services, distributed systems, and databases. Includes advanced topics in areas such as: mobile computing, remoting, web services for enterprise integration, workflow orchestrations for the enterprise, peer-to-peer computing, grid computing. Recommended preparation: COMPSCI 335.

Course Overview

Application development, in particular web and mobile application development. Performance and security considerations. Measuring and evaluating performance and security. Best practices. Thin client development and architectures. 

Functional Programming (FP) and its applications in parallel and distributed computing. The Channel (CSP/CML) and Actor models for concurrent and distributed computing, and their implementations in various modern programming languages, including C# and F#. Parallel programming, Amdahl's and Gustafson's laws. Advanced topics in FP illustrated in F# - such as: monads, computation expressions (sugared monads), Kleisli compositions - and their role in modelling various async, channel, actor features. Optional topics. Cloud actors, cloud functions (aka serverless), cloud monads.

  4. Master functional programming concepts with application to modern concurrent, parallel, distributed, cloud development (Capability 1 and 3)
  5. Describe technical ideas in both verbal and written form (Capability 2 and 4)
  6. Discuss ethical issues related to software development at national and global level (Capability 2 and 4)
  7. Identify security vulnerabilities in software (Capability 1, 2 and 4)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including in-class discussions will not be available as recordings.

Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
