Course Overview
This course focuses on fundamental issues that underpin research and the production of scholarly knowledge. It should facilitate production of research projects and be of broader interest as it explores concepts and debates that are important to fostering critical reasoning skills. The course begins by exploring ontology (what is “reality”?) and epistemology (does our knowledge capture reality? or, can we access reality? If so, how do we do this?) The course then explores two aspects of research. First, what is “data”? What kinds of things can be positioned and used as data? Second, how is data analysed? That is, how do we go from data to theory, interpretation, or making arguments and knowledge claims? In the remainder of the course, some methods are discussed and illustrated with examples of their use. These methods – ideological analysis and semiotics, discourse analysis, hermeneutics – can be used in ways that are “unobtrusive” and therefore do not typically require formal ethics approval. Given that dissertations at honours and MA level are unlikely to involve research participants (due to the time it can take to secure ethics approval), the aforementioned methods are prioritised to give students a range of ideas for developing possible honours/MA topics and viable ways to pursue them.

Workload Expectations
This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 30 point course that they are enrolled in.
For this course, you can expect 3 hours of seminar style lectures, and the remainder of hours for reading and thinking about the content, and work on assignments.
Delivery Mode
Campus Experience
Attendance is required at scheduled activities to receive credit for components of the course.
The course will not include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2024.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
