Course Prescription

An examination of critical approaches to the study of crime and crime control. Attention will be given to understanding how these approaches critically assess social problems surrounding crime and crime control strategies; the political, social and historical development of varying critical perspectives; and the ways in which such approaches may lead to changes in criminal justice policies and practices.

Course Overview

This course explores different contemporary criminological issues. It employs the reflexive method alongside a ‘governmentality’ lens to  reveal the myriad webs of control that play out across different local and international crime, punishment and social justice sites. We delve into contemporary crime issues and platforms such as environmental crimes, border controls, the war on drugs and terror, the prison industrial complex, structural poverty, racism and sexism, state crime, and epistemic violence. To help ground our theoretical knowledge of the relationship between criminal justice ideology, theory and practice we will engage in fieldtrips to a district court and/or a prison. The fieldtrips are designed to actively engage students in the reflexive lens, providing opportunity to think and write about how time and space is managed in those places/spaces and how these may reflect structural or cultural conditions, biases and tensions, reinforcing ideas of penal populism and/or cultural hegemony.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Be able to display advanced knowledge and understanding of scholarship, essential content and significance in their chosen area of contemporary criminology study. (Capability 4)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 30 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of seminar meetings, 14 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2024.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.

Seminars will not be available as recordings.

The course will not include live online events.

Attendance on campus is required for the quizzes.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly delivery.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Based on feedback from students this year, further examples of how the different contemporary criminological issues covered in class may apply the governmentality lens will be provided.
