Course Prescription

Examines personal career paths, design team and project operations and responsibilities in small studios through to large organisations, the role of professional networks, and resources for designers to present themselves and their work to future collaborators.

Course Overview

DES221 Professional Design Practice is an elective course for all Design and Design Conjoint students. By completing this course, students will gain experience in the understanding and management of self in various personal and professional capacities and creative team dynamics through completion of a design project negotiated with a real-world client. This course provides skills and exposure to the business of design in the local (Aotearoa-New Zealand) landscape in preparation for careers in design industries and in various related organisations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of tools and strategies in marketing design services and self promotion (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1 and 2.4)
  2. Articulate and demonstrate the value of design to all stakeholders (Capability 1.2, 1.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
  3. Demonstrate ability to create a comprehensive proposal for a professional design project (Capability 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3)
  4. Further develop competence and skills in communicating design concepts to stakeholders (Capability 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)

A total grade of 50% or higher is required to pass this course.
Where a student faces unavoidable personal circumstances (e.g. illness or a death in the family) that mean the student is unable to submit a component of coursework, he/she may apply for an extension.

The request is assessed by the Group Services Administrator and Course coordinator and must be supported by written evidence from a doctor or counsellor. The student must apply no later than five days before the due date of the assignment. In case of extreme difficulty closer to the assignment deadline contact your course coordinator directly. 
No extensions will be granted for problems such as accidentally erased computer files, which should always be prevented by keeping backup copies. When an extension is granted, students are expected to submit evidence of work in progress on the original assignment due date to demonstrate what has been completed up to that date. 

Teaching & Learning Methods

This 12-week course will be delivered in a Studio environment. Studio sessions are led by designers and design educators who will provide both theoretical and practical lenses to understand self, personal and team capacity toward the completion of a design project.

Delivery modes will include: lectures, self-directed assignments, critique, presentations and pitches, reading and analysis and small workshops on design methods processes and techniques.

The weekly 3-hour studio will engage students in 3 different modes of learning; self and peer reflection, design practice, and presentation. 

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 150 hours total on work for this course:

For this course, students can expect:

36 hours of studio work; critiques, discussion and iteration of work in class.

48 hours of engaging with online resources; reading, analysis, self reflection exercises.

66 hours of work on assignments and final deliverables.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including tutorials and studios to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Extensions of time to submit work will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the instructor.


Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Health & Safety

Students will be inducted on safe practices in the FabLab workshop, and complete specific safe use training for relevant machinery and tools.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Academic Integrity
