Course Prescription

The application of design methods, models and technologies to formulate a design specification for prototype development.

Course Overview

Through this course, students will develop advanced skills in the creation and management of a specific design project. Students will critically evaluate the specific research and production methodologies and apply strategies and methods to realise a design project that takes an account of the different relevant contexts of that project.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. To develop advanced skills in the creation and management of a specific design project (Capability 1.1, 2.1 and 3.1)
  2. To identify critically and give effect to the specific research and production methodologies appropriate to that project (Capability 1.2 and 2.4)
  3. To develop strategies and methods to realise a design project that takes account of the different relevant contexts of that project (Capability 2.1 and 6.1)
  4. To be able to realise a design specification to a professional standard. (Capability 3.3 and 5.4)

Teaching & Learning Methods

This course will be delivered over 12 weeks in a Studio environment.
Studio time will be spent each week in various combinations of the following :

Discussions: presenters and students will discuss weekly topics and apply principles and analysis frameworks that will improve practice and support project progress

Project Support: working on the skills and methods required to complete various stages of individual and group assignment submissions with the support of teaching and technical staff.

Self-guided activities: some studio sessions will be scheduled for students to have the time and access to equipment and technical support for various project WIP activities.

Workload Expectations

300 hours in one semester

• 72 studio contact hours (6 hrs per week)

• 24 workshop instruction hours (2 hrs per week)

• 24 hours of preparatory reading (2 hrs p.w.)

• 180 hours of assessed self study (15 hrs per week)

Please note that evidence of student participation may be expected on a variety of online platforms and in environments beyond the Studio and Lab spaces. Such as Canvas, Discord, Zoom, and others.

Students must regularly check on the Canvas site for specific instructions and updates.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including labs, or studios to complete components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars may be available as recordings.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable delivery

BYOD:
All students enrolled in this course should come to class with their own laptop. This is so students will have the core learning tools available in and outside of class. It also means students can increase their independence and have better control of a professional device to stimulate creativity and simplify their design process.

Students will be informed of any recommended software on the course Canvas website.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Academic Integrity
