Course Prescription

Develops the skills that are essential in theatre-making, including acting and storytelling, by staging a public performance. During the intensive three-week rehearsal period, under the guidance of an experienced director, students work in a collaborative fashion through ongoing group discussion and theatrical practice. Other transferable skills include effective communication, team-work and problem solving in an active and creative manner.

Course Overview

The ultimate aims of this course are to stage a devised play, to develop essential Drama tool-kits, and to learn the arts of theatre-making. The course starts from Week 2, and ends in Week 9. Just like Drama 202B Production, you will need to attend full-day rehearsals (four days a week) during the mid-semester break, and evening rehearsals in Week 7. The production is scheduled in Week 8.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop the skills that are essential in theatre-making (Capability 1.2, 2.3 and 3.1)
  2. Create a devised theatre production (Capability 3.2, 4.3 and 5.2)
  3. Be able to develop other important transferrable skills (Capability 4.3 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations

Student workload for this course is expected to be around 8 hours per week from Week 2 to Week 6, and additional 30-40 hours per week during the mid-semester break, Week 7 evenings and production Week in Week 8. The course starts in Week 2, and ends in Week 9. Students are required to attend all workshop and rehearsal sessions. Also, your participation and presentation are essential.

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including workshop, rehearsals and production to complete components of the course.

Workshops and Rehearsals won't be available as recordings. 

The activities for the course are scheduled as both standard weekly timetable and block delivery.

Provisional Schedule

During the semester time (starting from Week 2, 24th July): 2 x 2hrs each

Mid-semester break – 2 weeks: Monday to Thursday 9am – 4:30pm 

 Week 7 (11th Sep -17th Sep):  Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday: 6pm-9pm. 

Week 8 (18th Sep – 24th Sep): Monday to Sunday: 6pm – 9pm  

Week 9: Debrief session: 2 hours. 

This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2023.
